Summary

The ocean is uncontrollable and dangerous。 But to the sirens who swim the warm island waters, it’s a home more than worth protecting from the humans and their steam-propelled ships。 Between their hypnotic voices and the strength of their powerful tails, sirens have little to fear。

That is, until the ruthless pirate captain, Kian, creates a device to cancel out their songs。

Perle was the first siren captured, and while all since have either been sold or killed, Kian still keeps them prisoner。 Though their song is muted and their tail paralyzed, Perle’s hope for escape rekindles as another pirating vessel seizes Kian’s ship。 This new captain seems different, with his brilliant smile and his promises that Kian will never again be Perle’s master。 But he’s still a human, and a captor in his own way。 The compassion he and his rag-tag human family show can’t be sincere… or can it?

Soon it becomes clear that Kian will hunt Perle relentlessly, taking down any siren in her path。 As the tides turn, Perle must decide whether to run from Kian forever, or ride the forming wave into battle, hoping their newfound human companions will fight with them。

That was such a lovely read ♥The characters were endearing & deep &, to me, the strongest point of this story。 Perle - the main character - has amazing character development, Murielle was a doll, & Dejean is so absolutely precious & adorable I wish to protect him forever。 They all made sense through the story。The world was also quite fascinating & I loved the way the sirens' songs were described。My main complaint would be the 1st person writing。 I know it's so damn popular within YA books & hone That was such a lovely read ♥The characters were endearing & deep &, to me, the strongest point of this story。 Perle - the main character - has amazing character development, Murielle was a doll, & Dejean is so absolutely precious & adorable I wish to protect him forever。 They all made sense through the story。The world was also quite fascinating & I loved the way the sirens' songs were described。My main complaint would be the 1st person writing。 I know it's so damn popular within YA books & honestly, it wasn't that bad here, but the few awkwardness in the writing would have disappeared in a 3rd person writing following Perle's POV。 。。。more

Honestly this book was like a breath of fresh air。 I'm surrounded by books with steamy scenes and romantic pairings, but not gonna lie, this had none of it。 And I LOVED IT FOR THAT。 Seeing a platonic relationship in YA, Ha that's rare。 But this book was the perfect mixture of cute moments and the action and adventure I love。 Definitely recommend, 10/10 Honestly this book was like a breath of fresh air。 I'm surrounded by books with steamy scenes and romantic pairings, but not gonna lie, this had none of it。 And I LOVED IT FOR THAT。 Seeing a platonic relationship in YA, Ha that's rare。 But this book was the perfect mixture of cute moments and the action and adventure I love。 Definitely recommend, 10/10 。。。more

4。5! I loved this! OMG! Love! This hooked me from the first page and never let go! 3 stars。 A lot of the narration was just summary, like a diary except incredibly boring。 And some of the dialogue went from “this is a metaphor about hatred” which is cool into “I’m gonna preach to you about this metaphor for hatred” which was grating。 The concept is cute and I’m sure someone else will enjoy this but it’s too heavy handed and far too boring for me。

This was a very quick read for me, only a few characters and a fairly simple plot, but I absolutely loved the protagonist - they're as weird as you'd expect a siren to be, dark in some ways, but also compassionate and insightful, and the slow development of their relationships over the course of the book was so satisfying to watch play out。 Plus the world is very immersive and complex, overall a really enjoyable book This was a very quick read for me, only a few characters and a fairly simple plot, but I absolutely loved the protagonist - they're as weird as you'd expect a siren to be, dark in some ways, but also compassionate and insightful, and the slow development of their relationships over the course of the book was so satisfying to watch play out。 Plus the world is very immersive and complex, overall a really enjoyable book 。。。more

I enjoyed this a lot! It was a very good fantasy romance between a siren (who are all non-binary because human's concept of gender is really。。。。 well human) and an ace pirate。 They both have to deal with being newly disabled over the course of the novel, which I thought was really cool。 I enjoyed the worldbuilding immensely, the world has this steampunk-y vibe, and the development of the sirens as a predator species, the different perspectives on things from humans was so good! I love love love reading from the perspective of the "monster", especially when it's well done, and I thought it was excellent in Our Bloody Pearl。 Anyway, this was really my jam, pretty character-driven, from a siren's POV, some action but a decent focus on relationship development between Perle and all their new human family members/pod-mates。 I immediately pre-ordered Once Stolen after finishing this haha。 。。。more

Our Bloody Pearl, a steampunk-inspired fantasy is a story of compassion, love, and healing。The writing itself was captivating, allowing me to easily visualize and feel the ocean, the waves, and the house of the main character by the sea。 This book carries a lightness and warmth despite it dealing with heavy themes such as trauma, death, and the acceptance of one being disabled。 In fact, this was my first time reading a book where the protagonist is binary and disabled, and I truly love how the b Our Bloody Pearl, a steampunk-inspired fantasy is a story of compassion, love, and healing。The writing itself was captivating, allowing me to easily visualize and feel the ocean, the waves, and the house of the main character by the sea。 This book carries a lightness and warmth despite it dealing with heavy themes such as trauma, death, and the acceptance of one being disabled。 In fact, this was my first time reading a book where the protagonist is binary and disabled, and I truly love how the book showed Perle processing their emotions; from the time it dawned on them, to finally accepting that their disability does not make them any less of who they are。 As a non-disabled person, I was glad I had the chance to read a book with a protagonist that was very self-aware of their feelings。, communicating in such a way that educates the reader as well。 The book addresses so many themes; it says and teaches so much in ways the reader can easily understand without it being overwhelming。Usually, I read and enjoy books that are heavily plot-driven。 Our Bloody Pearl had a very simple plot and plain world-building as it mostly focused the spotlight on the characters themselves。 Which I didn’t know I would enjoy until I read this book。 During the first parts of the book, I felt an uneasy mystery regarding the other characters’ backgrounds and motives, but it was eventually answered towards the end。 The main aspect I enjoyed about reading this book was the diversity of characters and differing personalities presented on page。 You have different characters that are tough yet sweet, while some were funny, dramatic, and kind。 The relationship the characters shared with each other, and how Perle gradually learned to trust her new-found family, was something that I couldn’t help but literally smile at, just because of the wholesomeness of it all。 It was also very interesting and eye-opening to learn how Perle and Dejean themselves learned to communicate with each other, as this was explained really well in the book in regards to the idea of communicating concepts in their language。 As I was reading through scenes that showed their friendship and love towards each other, I remember thinking that these were the kind of characters I would protect。Although it was saddening to read about the existing conflict between the humans and sirens, and the pain and deaths each causes on both sides, both Dejean and Perle had the courage to acknowledge this, which eventually allowed them to take the first step in trying create a better world for both sirens and humans。 And that started with Dejean offering compassion to Perle, who in turn offered forgiveness to Kian。 This, to me, was a clear representation of how hatred can continue spinning the cycle, but one show of kindness can dismantle that cycle, as was seen towards the end。The way the book was narrated was very introspective, portraying how Perle processed their thoughts and fears。 This show of processing was relevant to allowing the reader to understand how one thinks and feels after facing abuse。 But it also gives words of encouragement, with the book promoting the overall theme of healing through time。 This is why I I would consider this book as a comfort book, because through Perle, we are reminded that our past does not need to be our future。 。。。more

At the start of the book I'd have given Our Bloody Pearl 4 stars, but in the second half only 2 - though I did like the very end。 I think I didn't quite have the right expectations for this story after seeing several people say that this was a comfort read for them; it turned out to contain a lot more persistent violence and torture than I expected from that description。 However, let's start with the things I loved: the story pulled me in right from the start, and I immediately liked the main ch At the start of the book I'd have given Our Bloody Pearl 4 stars, but in the second half only 2 - though I did like the very end。 I think I didn't quite have the right expectations for this story after seeing several people say that this was a comfort read for them; it turned out to contain a lot more persistent violence and torture than I expected from that description。 However, let's start with the things I loved: the story pulled me in right from the start, and I immediately liked the main character and the way the "foreign" siren logic was presented in first-person pov。 The other characters were also likeable and I felt we got to know them very quickly, which helped to connect to the story right away。 The first half of the book was very easy to read and the fast pace kept me intrigued。 And of course there's a lot of queer representation: the sirens having different views on gender than humans, as well as ace, trans, polyam, and F/F representation among the humans。 I discovered the book through GreatAce。Club, so that was awesome! But somewhere about halfway, there was an event in the story that made me like the main character less。 (view spoiler)[Namely, Perle makes the selfish decision of returning to the cove with the humans very soon after another siren, Storm, hurt Dejean。 I'm not a siren and yet I realised that surely Storm would still be there, but Perle was apparently happy to risk the lives of their human 'pod'。 This really bothered me because it could so easily have been avoided! (hide spoiler)]From that point on, we were thrown from one action scene to the next fight and yet another threat, and perhaps it was because it took me a long while to find time to read again, but it no longer felt to me like the intriguing series of events that it had been at the start。 I was happy when the end of the story was in sight。 Still, the story had a proper climax, and I think it's impressive that the writer pulled that off after so many other action scenes! But all in all, I think the second half of the book simply didn't come at the right time for me to read。 。。。more

First, let’s go over the fantastic representation in this。 Perle, and the rest of the sirens, don’t have a concept of gender like humans do, so they/them pronouns are used for them throughout the whole book。 There’s a lesbian couple, ace characters, and disability rep。 There’s probably more that’s slipping my mind right now, but it’s incredible。 I really appreciate that while this sort of has romance, it’s never obvious。 It’s much more subtle and gradual。 I absolutely love Perle and their dry sarcasm, the banter between them and Dejean when they’d built up enough language to communicate。 I was fascinated by how Bryn did that part, the sign language, because by some of the descriptions, I can see the parallels with American Sign Language。 (Context: I'm deaf and ASL is one of my primary languages。) But at the same time, it certainly fit in the world and made sense。 Of course, sign language is incredibly difficult to portray using English because there’s so much lost in translation, but the way it was done in this book worked for this situation。 To be clear, there aren’t any deaf characters。 The sign language was developed because humans can’t understand the vocal language of sirens, and the sirens already use signs in some situations。 Perle simply taught Dejean those, and they created more as their bond developed。 I really liked the siren mythology in this, how pods work, their views on social and gender constructs, territories, and the conversation around disability in terms of life in the sea versus on land。 I could go on and on, but I think I’ve said enough! I really liked this and encourage you to go read it! 。。。more

In either case, they are together and happy and I love them so much。 The rep doesn’t feel ‘forced’ like when some authors dump in their books different identities as a token。 Also, who doesn’t love a good story about pirates and sirens who rip hearts out and sing beautiful songs to lure in their victims? There was also trauma that was properly represented and faced with – although it could be further explored - and the characters were as fleshed out as they could be in a 230 pages book。 Our villain was a bit weak though, and was not really present for most of the book but it did not bother me since there was plenty of action overall。 The writing was also beautiful and descriptive without being tiring。 I could have gone with a bit more of world building but the lore surrounding the sirens was explored wonderfully。 Please give this book a try yourself。 It definitely deserves it。 It’s quick and light and I absolutely adored it。 I definitely recommend it。 As a person using both he/him and they/them pronouns, it made me so happy to be represented in a fantasy world as well。 。。。more

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 Absolutely beautiful page-turner about sirens and pirates with wonderful characterization with Perle's sarcasm, Dejean's soft nature, and a ragtag group in Simone, Murielle, Therin, and Abyss。 I loved reading Perle turning from a untrusting siren to one who happily embraced the possible unity between human and siren。 The descriptions of the ocean, siren culture, and fish were also enjoyable。 And I would very happily read any sequel that comes from this author。 Absolutely beautiful page-turner about sirens and pirates with wonderful characterization with Perle's sarcasm, Dejean's soft nature, and a ragtag group in Simone, Murielle, Therin, and Abyss。 I loved reading Perle turning from a untrusting siren to one who happily embraced the possible unity between human and siren。 The descriptions of the ocean, siren culture, and fish were also enjoyable。 And I would very happily read any sequel that comes from this author。 。。。more
